DisruptHR NEWS: Stand Out on the DisruptHR Stage — 7 Tips for Giving a Powerful DisruptHR Talk

Published 8 months ago • 3 min read

Bonjour perturbateur!

As the Chief Excitement Officer for DisruptHR, I'm often asked for my opinion on what makes a DisruptHR Talk great. As someone who has watched hundreds (maybe thousands) of DisruptHR Talks, here are a few tips I give:

Be ready to go as soon as you're introduced. Don't reference people or things going on at the event or stuff mentioned in other Talks. Get right into your message.

Your opening should be awesome. Share a surprising fact. Shock people. Say something controversial. Get a laugh. Grab their attention!

Thou shalt not pitch or sell a product or service in your Talk. Seriously, don't be that human. DisruptHR Talks must be about an IDEA.

If you're talking about a popular topic - culture, diversity, employee engagement, leadership, remote work, etc. - please share a new approach. Everyone knows that these are critical issues affecting the workplace. If you want to make an impact in one of these areas, say something new!

Use language that you would use in talking with your friends. But don't just throw in a four letter word just to sound edgy. We want people to hear language that they can relate to, but you also need to be mindful that the video will be online for the world to see, so make sure it's aligned with your personal brand.

Practice ahead of time, but not too much. You'll likely get ahead of or behind the timing of your slides at some point. Know your main points, and keep going. Imperfect Talks are part of the fun of DisruptHR.

Have fun! We love the fact that all DisruptHR speakers are faced with the same task: making their point in 5 minutes, with exactly 20 slides that are set to advance automatically every 15 seconds. By keeping seasoned speakers on their toes, and giving new speakers some guardrails to stay within, a lot of great ideas are shared by a diverse mix of speakers on DisruptHR stages around the world.

I hope these tips help you give a great DisruptHR Talk!

Hello Disruptor! Have you ever wondered what makes a DisruptHR Talk truly great? Forget perfect polish or pro speakers - to me, it's all about passion and pushing boundaries. I've seen many nervous first-timers, and the timing of the slides getting away from some speakers, but their ideas? Interesting. That's the DisruptHR spirit: sharing bold ideas, even if it shakes things up a bit. And guess what? A DisruptHR idea doesn't have to be "disruptive" to be impactful. Some of my favorite Talks...
