DISRUPTHR NEWS: Beyond Perfect Polish: What Makes a DisruptHR Talk Unforgettable?

Published 4 months ago • 2 min read

Hello Disruptor!

Have you ever wondered what makes a DisruptHR Talk truly great?

Forget perfect polish or pro speakers - to me, it's all about passion and pushing boundaries.

I've seen many nervous first-timers, and the timing of the slides getting away from some speakers, but their ideas? Interesting.

That's the DisruptHR spirit: sharing bold ideas, even if it shakes things up a bit.

And guess what? A DisruptHR idea doesn't have to be "disruptive" to be impactful. Some of my favorite Talks have tackled familiar topics with fresh perspectives, have simply left me amazed at the creativity brought to the stage, or laughing at the slides or the speaker's jokes.

DisruptHR is more than just mind-blowing Talks. It's about the connections - sparking conversations that ignite change, and building a global community of people who are transforming the future of work.

With over 7,000 videos of DisruptHR Talks online, I'm sure I'll never be able to watch them all, but I do attempt to watch as many as I can, so we can feature a variety of Talks on our LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter pages.)

Here's a diverse mix that have recently grabbed my attention:

Shahzia Noorally - Program Manager - Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging at Enmax - Do You Know the Reference Man? - DisruptHR Calgary 9.0

Cory Raggi - Chief Operating Officer at RDG+Partners - The Edge of Optimism - DisruptHR Rochester 3.0

Brian Tucker - Director, Human Resources at Elior North America Maybe War is Not the Answer - DisruptHR Princeton 1.0

Kali Love - Chief Impact Officer at #lovework - Neuro-Spicy Is Nicey - DisruptHR Denver 15.0

Jill Tkachu - Manager of Capacity Management at Enbridge Liquids Pipelines Engineering - HR: An Internal Mobility Pilot Built for Employees by Employees - DisruptHR Edmonton 8.0

Chaz Billington - Partner at Vorys - Artificial “Intelligence”? Dealing With AI in Your Workplace (Because It’s Probably Already There) - DisruptHR Cleveland 11.0

CaTyra Polland - CEO & Founder of Love for Words - Your Job Description Sucks! - DisruptHR Rochester 2.0

Mikki Gates - Director of Human Resources at indieDwell Colorado Shut the Door on Your Open Door Policy - DisruptHR Colorado Springs 3.0

Christina Luconi - Chief People Officer at Rapid7 Stop Worrying About Getting Invited to the Adult's Table and Take Your Seat at the Head - DisruptHR Boston 5.0

Ethan Ostrowski - College Student at NDSU - Gen Z: Disrupted! - DisruptHR Fargo-Moorhead 6.0

Nathalie Guthrie - Director, Human Resources at CENGN - Unlock Your Success With Annoying People - DisruptHR Ottawa 6.0

If you've not done so yet, I encourage you to find an upcoming DisruptHR event near you and apply to speak or reach out to the local organizers about future speaking opportunities.

Maybe your Talk will become one that we feature and share with the global DisruptHR community in the future!

Բարև խանգարող! As I've shared in previous editions of this bi-monthly newsletter, we're excited to be celebrating the 10th anniversary of DisruptHR on December 13, 2023, with our eighth event in Cincinnati, OH — where DisruptHR began back on December 13, 2013. It's been an amazing journey since then! We've grown from a small group of passionate HR professionals located in our city, to a global community, which now includes 154 licensed cities in 34 countries. 😮 And along the way, we've helped...

Hello Disruptor! What makes a DisruptHR Talk great? I shared seven tips in the last DisruptHR NEWSletter for giving a great DisruptHR Talk, but I believe that more goes into making a Talk great than the delivery. Some of my personal favorite DisruptHR Talks have been given by people who were terrified to take the stage (it showed), got behind on their slides (but recovered with humor), or had never spoken on stage before (so they were a little rusty). But they all believed in their ideas and...
